"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement." -Steve Prefontaine

Some random fitness thoughts

I know a day can't do much. I know that after a day, the change I'm looking for will not happen. I am aware. However, I must say that I feel great right now. Although everything's still a bit sore, everything feels good. Like I accomplished something. And maybe it's just getting over a bad breakup and finding myself inside again or just letting free and doing something that I know I need to do, but whatever it is, I like it. I'm comfortable. I'm okay with going to swim in a river in a bikini which is something, a year ago, hell I would never have done in my life! I'm excited to slip into a swanky (although classy and cute) lace dress the green color of envy and hit the town.

Whatever it is, it's the motivation keeping me going. It's the motivation to drag myself out of bed at 6 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and go for a run. It's worth it. I never realized before and I don't think many do, just how worth it is once you start. And all you have to do is slip on some sneakers, shorts and a t, plug in your iPod and get out and run.

Getting others motivated

My goal for this week is to get my mom out on one of my runs with me, even if she just does walk/power walk instead of walk/jog intervals. I managed to get my dad to come along yesterday. Although he just walked, I counted it as a success to get others outside and exercising.

I've also managed to spread the word about Couch to 5k. My friend Wesley dared me if at the end of the summer, I can finish 5k, then he'll run one with me in the fall. Motivation! I almost got Adam to start the program, though he enjoys swimming more than running and will be sticking to it.

The Day After

Waking up this morning, I expected to be sore. Along with the run yesterday, I had done 30 push ups, 30 side crunches, 30 "swimmings," 30 tricep pulls, and some other exercises. I expected a full body sore.

And that's pretty much what I got, but surprisingly, I'm actually feeling pretty good. Even though my muscles are sore and fatigued and my next run day won't be until Tuesday (work schedule and recovery time), I do feel good. I haven't lost anything on the scale yet, but since I'm building muscle, that's to be expected. I feel better about myself though. I'm headed down to the Scantic River with my friends, Wesley and Rachael, today and I'm sure I'll be slipping into my bikini. I don't need to hide and that's the best feeling in the world.

Breakfast was a bowl of Cherrios, a handful of blueberries, some fat free milk, and a cup of coffee with my usual Almond Joy creamer (my guilty pleasure in the mornings.)

I stretched out my muscles a bit so they don't feel so stiff for very long. Today will be a busy day exercise wise even without runs because I've got riding my horse and the river planned today. This morning I've already started my morning with moving bookcases with my dad and stripping off old wallpaper!

My motivation for the day: I AM BEAST.

Weight: Still 134.
Goal Weight: 115
Feeling: Excellent, but sore
Sleep: An entire 10 hours (with some crazy dreams, but they were funny by the time morning came around)

Week 1 Day 1

This afternoon I got it in my head that it was time I shaped up. At 4'11, I need to lose about 15-20 pounds to be back where I want to. After college kind of kicked my ass and working at a computer all day, either at home or in the office, exercise was something I was not getting enough of. I began the last week by starting to cut proportions because let's face it, we as Americans eat way too much quantity. It's not the quantity, but the quality of the food that's important.

Today, June 29, I downloaded the Couch to 5k app for my iPod touch. After knowing a few friends that experienced a lot of success with the program, I was set up to begin running.

On a day with 90 degree weather, I headed out at 4 p.m. with my water bottle and iPod, ready to tackle the 30 minute workout. And tackle I did.

Although needing to stretch more next time, the 30 minutes actually went by pretty quickly. I was surprised. Day 1 calls for a 5 minute warm up and then 1 minute jog 1.5 minute brisk walk intervals and then a 5 minute cool down. Needless to say, I'm exhausted. Came up and ran up to the shower while stripping off the sweaty t shirt and shorts. The shoes were abandoned in about 2 seconds flat once I got in the house.

I'm very proud of myself. I'm proud of myself for turning a new page in my life and tackling something like this. My plan is to run either Saturday or Sunday, Tuesday and Thursdays in the mornings (if I have to, I'll do night runs but the mornings would be better.)

So Couch to 5k, bring it on!
