"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement." -Steve Prefontaine

Week 1 Day 1

This afternoon I got it in my head that it was time I shaped up. At 4'11, I need to lose about 15-20 pounds to be back where I want to. After college kind of kicked my ass and working at a computer all day, either at home or in the office, exercise was something I was not getting enough of. I began the last week by starting to cut proportions because let's face it, we as Americans eat way too much quantity. It's not the quantity, but the quality of the food that's important.

Today, June 29, I downloaded the Couch to 5k app for my iPod touch. After knowing a few friends that experienced a lot of success with the program, I was set up to begin running.

On a day with 90 degree weather, I headed out at 4 p.m. with my water bottle and iPod, ready to tackle the 30 minute workout. And tackle I did.

Although needing to stretch more next time, the 30 minutes actually went by pretty quickly. I was surprised. Day 1 calls for a 5 minute warm up and then 1 minute jog 1.5 minute brisk walk intervals and then a 5 minute cool down. Needless to say, I'm exhausted. Came up and ran up to the shower while stripping off the sweaty t shirt and shorts. The shoes were abandoned in about 2 seconds flat once I got in the house.

I'm very proud of myself. I'm proud of myself for turning a new page in my life and tackling something like this. My plan is to run either Saturday or Sunday, Tuesday and Thursdays in the mornings (if I have to, I'll do night runs but the mornings would be better.)

So Couch to 5k, bring it on!
